MELFORD (MEL) ASPLUND

Melford (Mel) Asplund, 76, of 1205 Mill Rd., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away in Fort Frances on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003.
He was born June 18, 1927 in Fort Frances to the late John and Anne Asplund. Raised in Fort Frances, Mel had lived here his entire life.
A veteran of WWII, he served in training in Canada until his discharge at the end of the war. On June 13, 1951 he was united in marriage to Olga Badiuk, and over the years raised their family.
Mel began his career at Gagne Pharmacy in Fort Frances. In 1960, he purchased Emo Drugs in Emo, Ont., where this year he celebrated his 50th year of practice as a pharmacist.
Mel enjoyed the Emo Coffee Crew, where he and many friends shared memories and stories for several years.
He was predeceased by his wife, Olga Asplund on Jan. 5, 1990; his daughter-in-law, Janet Asplund in 1996; his granddaughter, Lauren Asplund in 1997; his sister, Aleta; and his brother, Merlin Asplund.
Mel is survived by his son, Greg Asplund of Fort Frances, Ont.; grandson, James Asplund of Winnipeg, Man.; one brother, Iven Asplund and wife, Layla, of Britt, Mn.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Emo Legion Br. #99 in Emo, with Rev. Eileen Bragg officiating.
Interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.
