MAXINE MUDGE SMITH

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Maxine Lelah Marie (nee Hickerson), on July 10, 2003 in Calgary, Alta.
While Maxine suffered through a long and difficult illness, she never lost that innate kindness that defined her. We are thankful her last days were filled with peace and serenity.
A soft-spoken woman of great warmth and beauty, she will be in our hearts always.
Maxine was a community leader, a valiant worker with and for the mentally challenged, and a life-long volunteer. She also was an active member and Senior Regent of the Moose, and was famous for her culinary skills.
Maxine spent her early years growing up in Mine Centre, Ont. She had many cherished memories of her dear family, her beloved grandparents, and her aunts, uncles & cousins.
Maxine trained and worked as a dental assistant in Fort Frances, Ont. After marrying our dear father, George W. Mudge, they moved to Lake Shebandowan, Ont. in 1946. There, they owned and operated the Shebandowan Hotel for many years.
Maxine was predeceased by her husband, George W. Mudge in 1973; her parents, Grace and Jim Hickerson; her dear sister, Delphine Cone; and her brother, Melvin Hickerson.
Maxine remarried and lost her husband, Hugh Smith, in 1999.
Left to mourn are her children, Georgette (Ken) Thrasher, Susanne (Murray) Stover, and Jim Mudge; along with her five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; her brother, James Hickerson; and countless relatives and friends who loved this wonderful woman.
Maxine adored children and was always there to help any child who needed her particular brand of TLC. She cherished her grandchildren, Jennifer (Toth) and George Stover, Jacqueline(Skeet), and Jeff Thrasher and Joelle (Andison).
If her illness had not intervened, Mom would have been over the moon enjoying her 13 great-grandchildren.
Maxine leaves a legacy of love and compassion that inspires all who knew her. If you are unable to attend the memorial service, please take a private moment to celebrate this dear lady in your own way.
Her memorial service will take place Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 at 3 p.m. at La Place Rendez-Vous in Fort Frances. The family invites you to join us as we celebrate and honour Maxine’s life.
If you wish, a donation may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or the Bethany Care Foundation, Level 7, 8th Avenue N.W., Calgary, Alta.
In living memory of Maxine’s, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McGinnis and Holloway.
