Mary Harlamow (nee Andreyeva) passed away May 31, 2013 in Calgary, Alta. on May 31, 2013 at the age of 91.
Mary was a long-time resident of Fort Frances, Ont., where she raised her four children with her husband, Pete, who predeceased her in 1976.
She is survived by her children, Laura Coak, Theresa Turgeon, Donna Stephenson, and Peter Harlamow; four grandchildren, Bradley Kostovich (Theresa), Tara Tratch (Laura), and Alexandra and Mitchell Stephenson (Donna); and three great-grandchildren, Taylor and Ryan Tratch, and Jamie Kostovich.
Mary was born Oct. 17, 1921 in a small village near Mariupol in Ukraine. Although life was hard in post-revolutionary Soviet Union, she spoke of her childhood with great fondness.
As a teenager, she was taken to Germany and spent the war working in a labour camp in Berlin, where she met her husband, Pete.
After the Second World War, they spent several years in a refugee camp in Austria, where their first daughter, Laura, was born.
In 1948, the family immigrated to Northern Ontario. They first settled in Kashabowie and later moved to Rainy River, and then Fort Frances.
Mary loved gardening, fishing, quilting, and playing cards, and will be especially remembered for her famous cinnamon buns.
After her husband died, she stayed in Fort Frances until 1989, when she moved to Calgary to be closer to her family.
She spent many wonderful years taking care of her grandchildren, who she adored. Her happiest times were being in the garden, and making cabbage rolls and perogies for many family get-togethers.
Dear Mama and beloved Babushka—we will miss you and may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
A reception will follow at La Place Rendez-Vous in Fort Frances.
