Mary Ellen Rose (Baby) Deafy, 18, of Atikokan, Ont., passed away on Monday, May 7, 2007 in Atikokan.
Mary was born July 23, 1988 in Fort Frances, Ont. to Ray and Joan Deafy. She attended elementary school in Mine Centre and high school in Atikokan.
She enjoyed going to pow-wows, dancing, and playing cards, and was very enthusiastic about volunteering to help in the community. She also enjoyed her Playstation, game cube, wrestling, and hanging out.
Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Joan and Ray Deafy; and her brothers and sisters, Jennifer Ignace, James Ignace, Bruce Matinet, Bradley Matinet, Alicia Matinet, Grace Matemack, Rae Deafy, Peter Deafy, and Dana Campbell.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Juanita Matinet and Adele Matinet; grandparents, Bill and Rose Deafy and George and Sarah Ignace; and aunts and uncles, Elizabeth Starr, Amelia Chappois, Stella Gray, Joyce Bunting, and Rose Bunting.
A traditional service was held Friday, May 11, 2007 at 10 a.m. at the Seine River First Nation gymnasium. Elder George Boshkaykin officiated, followed by interment in the Seine River First Nation Cemetery.
A funeral wake was held Thursday, May 10, 2007 from 5 p.m. at the Seine River First Nation gymnasium.
The pallbearers were Shane Whitecrow, Norman Girard, Darcy Whitecrow, Jeffrey Boshkaykin, Ringo Whitecrow, and Roger Whitecrow.
