MARY A. SMITH (Paasaquaatamok)

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, Mary A. Smith of Naicatchewenin First Nation, on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004 at Rainycrest Home for the Aged in Fort Frances, Ont.
She was born Oct. 7, 1923 at Northwest Bay First Nation.
Grandma enjoyed having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren around her. She also enjoyed sewing, going to pow-wows, Bingo, cooking, and visiting with her sister, Nina.
Mary is survived by six daughters, Louise Morrisseau and Florence Yerxa (William) of Couchiching First Nation, Alice Smith (Gerald) of Fort Frances, and Liza Smith (Fred), Lorraine Smith (Tom), and Elsie Perrault (Richard) of Naicatchewenin First Nation; two sons, Gilbert Smith (Delia) and Wayne Smith (Colleen) of Naicatchewenin First Nation; sister, Nina Windego (Jim) of Fort Frances; and sister-in-law, Rose Cyr of Naicatchewenin First Nation.
Also surviving are 59 grandchildren; 137 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her mother, Ruby Councillor, and her brother, Eddie Councillor, in January, 1966; her father, Charles Councillor, in January, 1944; her sister, Delia Dale in March, 1945; her husband, Alphonse, in July, 1986; son, Leonard, in June, 1979; sons-in-law, Maurice Perrault in July, 1993 and Harry Morrisseau Sr. in August, 2001; sisters-in-law, Helen Morrison and Florence McDonald; great-grandsons, Kevin Smith Jr. in November, 1990 and Samad in December, 2004; and one great-granddaughter, Heather Smith, in January, 1992.
The funeral will be held Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Naicatchewenin First Nation gym. A wake will be held Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 at the Naicatchewenin gym, commencing at 3:30 p.m.
Elder Jim Windego will officiate the traditional burial ceremony.
The pallbearers will be her grandsons, Ed Yerxa, Harry Morrisseau Jr., Don Smith, Gerald Smith Jr., Waylon Smith, Gary Smith, Darren Smith, and Wes Smith.
