Marjorie (Madge) Hammond, 93, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence on Monday, Jan. 23, 2006.
Madge was born Oct. 26, 1912 in Fort Frances to the late William and Eva Jane Readman. On Aug. 1, 1936, Madge was united in marriage to James (Jim) Hammond. They lived in Fort Frances for 44 years before moving to Rainy River, Ont.
While residing in Rainy River, Madge worked for a period of time at the Rainy River Post Office, as well as at Ozie’s Restaurant. Together, they raised their family and were active in the community through the United Church, Agricultural Society, and Horticultural Society.
Jim and Madge also helped provide Meals on Wheels in Rainy River. As well, she was past president and a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #54 in Rainy River.
Madge was a homemaker most of her life, and was well-recognized for her superb cooking and baking skills, having won many prizes at district fairs.
In 1997, Madge and Jim moved back to Fort Frances, where they settled to be closer to their family.
Madge was very active all of her life until the passing of her husband, Jim, in 2004. She will be missed very much by her family and friends.
Madge is survived by three children, Arlene MacLean and David (Linda) Hammond, all of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Diana (Frank) Maraj of Fort Frances, Ont.; grandchildren, Theresa (Todd) Faubert, Stephen Hamilton (Chantel), Jennifer Hamilton, Krista (Craig) MacIntosh, Debbie Hammond (Glenn), Trevor (Debbie) Maraj, Lee-Ann (Ron) Hines, and Dee-Dee Maraj; great-grandchildren, Emily and Daphne Faubert, Abigail Hamilton, Jayden Maraj, and Cadence MacIntosh; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Hammond, in 2004; four brothers, Ed, Jack, Harry, and Bo Readman; three sisters, Anne Voisin, Evelyn Hammond, and Doris Beck; and one son-in-law, Allan MacLean.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 27, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Ron Hines will officiate, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Friends may visit prior to the service Friday morning at Green Funeral Home.
