Marion Scott Alexander, nee Witherspoon, of 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Sunday, May 5, 2002.
Marion was born on the family farm in Burriss, Ont. on Aug. 29, 1918 to Christina and James Witherspoon. She attended and graduated from the Burriss Consolidated School, achieving Grade 12.
Marion was an avid ball player and enjoyed many years as part of the Burriss/Emo girls’ baseball team who reigned as champions for many years. Marion’s love of horses never waned and a true testament of this hangs on nearly every Witherspoon wall.
She also was fiercely proud of her Scottish heritage, returning to Scotland as a young woman to visit family still living there, and remained in contact with many of them throughout the years.
In November, 1939, Marion married Russell Alexander and moved to the family farm in Kingsford, where she resided and farmed for the next 55 years until failing health forced her to leave.
Mom loved the farm and her love of animals showed. Her cows and calves were all named and much to everyone’s amazement, they dutifully came when they were called.
Mom’s hospitality and cooking skills were second to none. No matter who, how many, or what time they arrived at the farm, they always left sated and feeling like a member of the family.
Marion was predeceased by her parents, James and Christina; in-laws, William and Ellen Alexander; son, James in 1961; husband, Russell in 1989; sisters, Libby McKay and Chrissy Steele; brother, James Witherspoon; sisters-in-law, Bernice Witherspoon, Nora Witherspoon, and Lizzie Middleton; and brothers-in-law, Norman Alexander, Albert Alexander, Dave Willets, Edwin Spicer, and Bill Middleton.
Marion is survived by daughter, Lois Hadfield and her husband, Wayne, of Winnipeg, Man.; son, Murray and his wife, Debbie, of Fort Frances, Ont.; brother, Bill Witherspoon; and sisters-in-law, Ethel and Edna Alexander, Emma Spicer, Clara Reardon, Laura and Lizzie Middleton, Lois Witherspoon, and Laura Zabudney.
Marion also had a special place in her heart for Brian and Carole Dent and their children, Chris and Jenny, whom she adopted as family.
Marion also is survived by a very special niece, Jean Hayes and her husband, Wes. Jean’s continued love and support to Mother and the family through the years has been immeasurable.
She also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who all had a special place in her heart.
