It is with deep sadness that the family of Marcel Tookenay announces his passing on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the age of 70.
Marcel has joined his parents, Leo and Margaret; siblings, Melvin, Joseph, Ethel (Reino), and Nancy (Harley); and his great-nephew, Adam Ahola.
Marcel was a gifted hockey player in his younger days. He played hockey in Calgary and later for the Port Arthur Marrs. He had the privilege of playing for the Memorial Cup when he played for the Fort William Canadians. He also played for the Jacksonville Blades.
His love for hockey remained his entire life and he avidly followed the season games.
Marcel was a Couchiching First Nation band member and came to live here in the early 1990s.
Marcel worked for Clara Painting and was an iron worker for many years. He later worked for area First Nations helping to build homes, where he met his loving wife, Fern.
Marcel leaves behind his wife, Fern, and step-children, April (Matt) and Michelle. “Papa Marcel” leaves behind his grandchildren, Kale, Hannah, Shyloh, Jayce, Jadyn, Jaryn, Nazem, Nico, and Remy.
He also leaves his children, Leo and Renae (Todd); and grandchildren, Milton, Dante, Ethan, and Brandon, Alexander, Vanessa, Zen, and Isiah.
“Papa Marcel” was blessed, as well, with great-grandchildren, Avery, Sienna, Peter, and Abigail.
Marcel also is survived by his brother, Vincent (Rosemary); sister-in-law, Vianna; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Marcel will be sadly missed by his close friends . . . and many others too numerous to name.
A celebration of Marcel’s life was held Thursday, April 14, 2016 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church on the Fort William First Nation.
