MARJORIE EDNA BYRNES
Marjorie Edna Byrnes, 87, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances.
Marjorie was born in Pinewood, Ont. on June 30, 1920 to the late Thomas and Jessie (nee Reid) Smart. She attended school in Pinewood and, except for a brief time spent in eastern Ontario, lived most of her life in Rainy River District.
She was married to Leopold (Leo) Byrnes on June 16, 1953 in Prince George, B.C. They lived in Rainy River, Ont. until 1959, when they moved to Fort Frances and raised their family.
She is survived by her three sons, Glen (Kim and son, Lucas) of Thunder Bay, Ont., Tom (Joyce) of Calgary, Alta., and Darcy of Fort Frances, Ont.; and grandchildren, Melissa Byrnes and Dustan Byrnes of Calgary.
Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Geraldine Smart and Marjorie Byrnes of Rainy River, Ont., Marie Byrnes of Fort Frances, Ont., and Elma Smart of West Bank, B.C.; as well as numerous nephews and nieces, including Edna Collett of Alberton Township, Ont. and Snookie Jarvis of Rainy River, Ont.
Marjorie was predeceased by her devoted husband, Leo; brothers Bill, Frank, and Whitelaw; sister, Hazel; and infant sister, Audree.
Mom enjoyed the simple pleasures that life had to offer while being a full-time homemaker and community volunteer. She enjoyed the company of family and friends, attending mass at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, and being a member of the Catholic Women’s League.
She also was actively involved in the Rainycrest Ladies Auxiliary for many years, and the Senior Citizens Club #27.
Mom also loved to nurture her plants, especially her favoured African violets. Crocheting, knitting, and reading also occupied many of Mom’s hours.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007 from 7-9 p.m., with prayers at 7:30 p.m., at the Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 31, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Fort Frances, with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
A reception for family and friends will follow in St. Mary’s Church hall.
Special thanks to the nursing staff of St. Andrew’s Ward, Dr. Algie, Fr. Francis, and all the friends and family who helped comfort and care for Mom.
