It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mabel McCormick, who passed away peacefully at home in Devlin, Ont. on Monday, March 30, 2009.
She was born Aug. 17, 1944 in Winnipeg, Man. to the late Steve and Millie Kuchar.
Mabel grew up in McMunn, Man., attending elementary school there before continuing to high school in Whitemouth, Man.
Mabel continued to live and work in the McMunn area until 1965, when she met the love of her life, Lenard. Mabel was united in marriage to Lenard on Oct. 29, 1966 and moved to Hamilton, Ont., where she worked for the Hamilton Spectator.
Mabel gave birth to two sons, Ken and Andy, prior to embarking on a year-long journey throughout North America with her husband and children on “The Bus.”
Settling in Devlin, Mabel had a third son, Ed, and took to the task of raising her “boys.”
Mabel went on to work at Stedman’s Department Store, obtained additional training, and soon began her employment at the Northwestern Health Unit, finally retiring in 1999.
Mabel was an active member of the Redwing Rebekah Lodge #109 in Fort Frances, Ont., and enjoyed the relationships she made through her involvement.
Mabel found joy in dancing, and was a member of the Pairs ’n Squares in Fort Frances. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends in the outdoors, and spending many summers at Boffin Lake, where she fished, picked berries, and listened patiently to tall tales told at the campfire.
It wasn’t until recently that Mabel knew the pleasure of grandchildren who she showered with affection and spoiled with special treats.
Mabel is survived by her husband, Lenard; sons, Ken (Randi) of Devlin, Ont., Andy (Jackie) of Stratton, Ont., and Ed of Devlin, Ont.; brother, Mike Kuchar of Fort Frances, Ont.; and grandchildren, Kolton, Kali, Callum, and Zander.
Mabel was predeceased by her parents, Steve and Millie; and older brother, Peter.
A celebration of Mabel’s life was held Friday, April 3, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with Rev. Diane Clifford officiating.
The honourary pallbearers were Mabel’s Rebekah sisters.
