Mabel Ann Abbott, 89, of Rainy River, Ont., passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the Rainy River Health Centre.
Mabel was born April 15, 1920 in the district of Forgue in the county of Aberdeen (Scotland) to the late Annie and Donald Wilson.
Mabel married Gar Abbott on June 15, 1936 and together they raised five children. They farmed until 1965, then they moved to Sioux Narrows, Ont., from which time Mabel cooked at restaurants and camps.
They bought a cafe in Rainy River, which they ran for a few years, then sold. Then she went back to cooking in a restaurant in Nestor Falls until she retired.
Mabel was a member for 26 years of the Legion in Rainy River, where she loved to go to play cribbage with family and friends. She also was a Moose member for 20 years and enjoyed outings to various casinos in the area.
Mabel is survived by her daughter, Jennette Cross; son, Donald Abbott of Logan Lake, B.C.; brother, Don Wilson of Calgary, Alta.; son-in-law, Bob Johnston; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Mabel was predeceased by her parents, Annie and Don Wilson; stepfather, Alex Hood; husband, Gar Abbott; son, Cecil Abbott; daughters, Jean Halcro and Linda Johnston; sister and brother-in-law, Ollie and Enio Maki; great-grandson, Zander Lachance; grandson, Nick Irwin; granddaughter, Jeannie Halcro; and great-grandson, Donovan Halcro.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
