Lyla Rae Coran passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Lyla was born the only child to Rollie and Helen Hyre on June 26, 1932 in Fort Frances. She grew up on the farm in Burriss Township, Ont. and spent many summers at the cabin on Lake Despair.
After graduating high school in Fort Frances, she attended teachers’ college in North Bay, Ont.
Lyla was united in marriage to the love of her life, Ray Coran, on Aug. 3, 1954 and just recently they shared their 57th wedding anniversary together. They remained in the Fort Frances area, where Lyla worked teaching in several area schools and raising her four children.
Lyla’s other interests were reading, gardening, and family time spent at the cabin on Red Gut Bay. In more recent years, she devoted herself to her grandchildren, enjoying their lives and activities.
Lyla was a member of the C.W.L. and a volunteer with the hospital auxiliary. She also enjoyed get-togethers with her Italian Ladies and Burriss Women groups.
Lyla is lovingly remembered by her husband, Raymond; and her children, Reno and Jill (Mihichuk), Terri and Richard Perron, Diana and Barry McTavish, and Mike and Tracey (Cunningham).
She also is survived by her grandchildren, Joel, Cody, Liza, Cara, Katie, Jake, Keith, Jackson, and Jessica. Her great-grandson, Evan, arrived well in time to get to know Grandma.
Also left to cherish her memory are her special friends, Barb Gustafson, Monique Strain, Angela LaForest, Dorothy Coran, Barb Coran, Toni Edgett, Olympia Benassi, Faye Gasparini, and Merle Warner.
Lyla was predeceased by her granddaughter, Nina Rae; and her parents, Rollie and Helen.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances, with Fr. Francis Pudicherry officiating.
The honourary pallbearers will be Lyla’s grandchildren and great-grandson.
