LUIGIA ‘GIGA’ CANDIDO

Luigia “Giga” Candido of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Monday, Dec. 29, 2003 at La Verendrye General Hospital with her family and friends at her side.
She was born July 17, 1913 in Azzono, Decimo, Italy to the late Luigi and Teresa Moretton.
Giga was united in marriage to Girolamo “Momi” Candido in Italy on Sept. 4, 1934. They immigrated to Canada that same year and settled in Fort Frances.
Giga was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, the Catholic Women’s League, and a past member of the Italian Ladies Club of Fort Frances. Her interests included gardening as she loved flowers and grew many varieties.
She also loved to crochet, which she shared with her family and friends, and bake many Italian specialties for the people she loved.
In her later years, Giga was not able to get out as much. She spent many hours on the phone visiting with her family and friends–even at her advanced age she never lost contact with people.
Giga was predeceased by her husband on Oct. 6, 1990; her sisters, Maria, Ginesta, Ernesta, Margherita, Regina, Iolanda, and Guiseppina; and her brothers, Guiseppe, Antonio, and Giovanni.
Giga is survived by a close nephew in Italy, Giacomino Moretton, and her niece, Angelina Candido in Toronto, and her sons, Enos and Dennis; and her special family, Cathy, Judy, Bunny, Louise, JoAnne, and their families, and many close friends and relatives in Italy and America.
The mass of the resurrection was celebrated Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Fort Frances. Fr. Rey Ronquillo officiated, with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Visitation was held Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 from 7 until 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Parish prayers were offered at 7:30 p.m.
Pallbearers were Dennis Candido, Enos Candido, Leno Gasparini, Ron Bernardi, Glenn Witherspoon, and Raymond Coran.
