Lois Maher passed away peacefully on Oct. 16, 2007, surrounded by her family, in Fort Frances, Ont. at the age of 78.
Lois was born April 22, 1929 to Verna McKerrow and Fred Langford in Sudbury, Ont., but moved to London, Ont. as a young child. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1951 with a degree in Honours English.
While at university, she made friendships that have lasted her lifetime.
After a year at teachers’ college, she taught in Forest Hill, Toronto, where she met her future husband, Barney Maher. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Hay River, N.W.T. to teach and began raising a family.
In 1959, they decided to move south to Northwestern Ontario and settled in Fort Frances. When her children were all in school full-time, Lois returned to teaching. She taught kindergarten at Burriss Consolidated, Alexander Mackenzie, Sixth Street, and F.H. Huffman Schools.
She retired from teaching in 1984, but maintained her interest in education through years of service on the Special Education Advisory Committee for the board of education.
Another important part of Lois’ life was her involvement in Knox United Church. She was very active in the United Church Women for many years and became a Life Member. She also served as a trustee for several years.
Lois was a loyal supporter of Fort Frances High School sports teams, in particular, the Muskie hockey team. She kept scrapbooks of the team through many seasons.
She also enjoyed spending time at the family cabin on Swell Bay with her children and grandchildren. Some of her other interests included reading and sewing for her family.
Left to grieve are her husband, Barney; and children, Ellen Anderson (John), Mary Beth, Ron (Heather Macdonald), Jeff, and Kathy (Claude Savard).
She also leaves her grandchildren, John Eric, Neil, and Britta Anderson, Jeffrey and Stephanie Draper, and Cameron Maher; as well as extended family and friends.
