Lois Irene Mathewson, 81, of Kingsford Township, Ont., passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at the Emo Hospital in Emo, Ont.
She was born Oct. 25, 1923 in Emo to Nelson and Maude Roberts, and grew up on the family farm in Kingsford Township.
On Sept. 3, 1940, she was united in marriage to Don Mathewson. Together they settled in Kingsford before moving to Emo in 1957.
Lois stayed at home, listening to music, gardening, and tending to her flowers and children.
She was a warm woman who had an open-door policy. All of her children’s friends were welcome for meals and sleepovers—and this tradition continued with her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, as well as the neighbourhood children.
In 1981, they returned to her parents’ farm in Kingsford, where she had resided since.
When Lois and Don lived in Emo, she was a very active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #99 Ladies Auxiliary.
Lois was predeceased by her parents, Nelson and Maude Roberts; husband, Don Mathewson on Feb. 17, 1993; one grandson; two brothers; and four sisters.
She leaves behind her daughters, Donna Smith of Emo, Ont. and Dianne Byington of Rainy River, Ont.; and sons, Dennis Mathewson of St. Carlos, Mexico, Darwin Mathewson of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Garry Mathewson of Edmonton, Alta.
Also surviving are her grandchildren, Don, Vaughnn, Mona, Shane, Sheila, Darren, and Glenda;; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Semenuk of Campbell River, B.C.; brother-in-law, John Eckroos of Victoria, B.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Monday, July 4, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Knox United Church in Emo. Rev. Frances Flook officiated, with interment in the Emo Cemetery in Emo.
The pallbearers were Vaughnn Smith, Don Silander, Sheldon Olson, Kelly Olson, Doug Cann, Glenda Desaulniers, and Sheila Villjanen.
The honourary pallbearers were her neighbours and friends.
