LLOYD JAMES HODGES

Lloyd James Hodges, 81, of Rainy River, Ont., passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003 at the Rainy River Health Centre in Rainy River. He was born Sept. 1, 1922 in Rainy River to the late Charles and Magna Hodges.
He was hired by the CNR as a call boy in November, 1941. He then enlisted in the army on Dec. 2, 1942, and served with the Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment and Winnipeg Rifles. He obtained the rank of corporal, company Sergeant Major, and 1/4 Master Sergeant.
During the war, he served in Canada, England, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was discharged June 7, 1946.
He resumed his career on the railway Sept. 8, 1946 as a fireman and was promoted to engineer in July, 1951. He retired in September, 1987.
Lloyd was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #54, serving as vice-president, second vice-president, president, past president, house chair, and finance chair. He also was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM), which is the highest award presented by the Legion.
He was a member of St. James Anglican Church, a past member of the Moose Lodge, and a member of the 727 Club. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Lloyd is survived by his brother, Ken (Eileen) Hodges of Melville, Sask.; and sisters, Ethel Wilson and Eileen Hodges, both of Rainy River, Ont., Shirley (Orville) Thacker of Kitchener, Ont., Gean (Bill) Ewald of Rainy River, Ont., and Charlotte (Gordon) Calder of Fort Frances, Ont.
Also surviving are two aunts, Stella Jenson of McInnis Creek, Ont., and Helen Wensley of Parksville, B.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Magna Hodges; brother, Norman Hodges; sister, Helen McQuaker; and brothers-in-law, Andy McQuaker and Les Wilson.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Rainy River. Lay leader Glen Armstrong officiated, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River.
Friends visited with the family on Wednesday evening, Dec. 17, 2003 at the Rainy River Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Rene Nordberg, John Amundsen, Carl Peters, Pat Giles, Ed Tymkin, and Fred Westover.
Honourary pallbearers were John Sirman, Harry Arnould, Herb Nelson, Don Marchuk, Jack Rattigan, Gerry Marchuk, Joe Kaliska, Don Budreau, Manny Nordin, and Terry Cooper.
