Leonard C. Boyd, 77, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 at his home. He was born Nov. 22, 1924 in Fort Frances, Ont., one of seven children born to John “Jack” and Alba Boyd.
He attended Fort Frances schools and graduated from Fort Frances High School in 1941. He worked for Boise Cascade Canada in Fort Frances briefly after high school before joining the Canadian Navy in 1942.
His tour of duty included time in the North Atlantic on overseas ocean escort duty. Before his discharge on Nov. 22, 1945, he had obtained a leading communications rating.
He returned to work for the Fort Frances mill until 1951. He then worked for the Veterans of Foreign Wars post before accepting a position with Boise Cascade in International Falls in 1967, and continued to work there until his retirement in 1989.
In his spare time, he loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, fastball, and curling. In 1952, he played semi-pro hockey for Sioux City, Iowa. He was a member of the Canadian Legion, St. Thomas Catholic Church, and the Alano Club.
He was predeceased by his parents, John “Jack” and Alba Boyd; brother, Frances Boyd; and sister, Margaret Reuter.
He is survived by his son, Shawn (Paula) Boyd of Garden Valley, Idaho; daughters, Dawn (Joe) Ose of Thief River Falls, Jan (Tom) Crumpton of Birchdale, and Cheryl (Scott) Weappa of Virginia; brothers, Doug Boyd of Fort Frances, Ont., John Boyd of Ladner, B.C., William Boyd of Fort Frances, Ont., and Jim Boyd of Winnipeg, Man.
He also is survived by 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in International Falls, Mn., with Rev. Fr. Thomas Meyer officiating.
Interment will be in the St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in International Falls, with Deacon Frances Zaren presiding.
