LEO AUSTIN PENNEY

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, brother, uncle, papa Leo Austin Penney, age 71, on Saturday, February, 5, 2022, at La Verendrye General Hospital with his family by his side.

Leo was born March 22, 1950, in Emo, Ont., and was raised on the family farm in Stratton with his parents Marguerite and George Penney along with nine siblings, Leo being the baby.

Leo worked on a few different farms around the district, then settling in Atikokan working 15 years for Caland Ore mine. After moving the family to Fort Frances, Leo worked approximately 14 years at Community Living and Precision Wood Products. With on-going health issues, Leo was given the greatest gift of all, a second chance at life. Leo accepted and maintained a double lung transplant from a young man living in Winnipeg, Man. May 2022 would have been 20 years with his new lungs, which in itself is a miracle.

Leo was an avid fan of local hockey and stock car racing. Leo would often venture off with his son Trevis to find the next race track or hockey game around. Leo also enjoyed hunting deer and moose with friends and family nearby. Leo could always be found tinkering or fixing almost anything, even to the last few days he had tools and supplies by his side ready for the next creation.

Leo’s four grandchildren held a big part of his heart, especially the eldest Kaydon. For many years these two were inseparable. Leo would rarely miss any hockey games or practices enjoying watching Kaydon play. As the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, Leo coached his son Trevis in hockey and now his son does the same.

Leo will be greatly missed by his son Trevis Penney (Melissa); his daughter Kimberly Penney-Peters (Rick); former spouse Bonnie Patterson; grandchildren Kaydon Penney, Lindsey and Reed Peters and Archer Penney; his brothers Bill Penney (Betty), Greg Penney (Donna); his sisters Marie Duhamel (Norman) and Pat Mosely; many nieces and nephews will have a special place in their hearts for Leo as well.

Leo was predeceased by his mother and father Marguerite and George Penney; his brothers Ed Penney, Frank Penney (Merle), Phillip Penney and Donny Penney; his sister Lucille Audette (John); and brother-in-law Butch Mosely.

Leo’s wishes were for everyone to gather to celebrate his life, but due to COVID restrictions a summer celebration of life will take place.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made in Leo’s name to Riverside Health Care Facilities, 110 Victoria Avenue, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 2B7.
