LENA WINIK

Lena Winik, 92, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015 at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances.
Lena was born Aug. 5, 1922 to Oliver and Mary Cholette in Notre Dame Du Nord, Que.
The ninth of 11 children, Lena was born into a French-Canadian, Roman Catholic family where music and laughter defined her memories.
She was united in marriage to Joseph Winik on June 26, 1941.
Lena dedicated her life to her husband and their children. A woman of many talents, in her younger years she enjoyed cooking, sewing, and taking care of her grandchildren.
A woman of deep passion, Lena took pride in her children, grandchildren, and her Québécois roots. A petite woman, she had a remarkable strength, both in her convictions and physically.
Although she could be as calm as a lake, she could shift into a whirlwind of surprising energy for her opinions were strong and her emotions boundless.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Jack (June) of Emo, Ont., Richard (Lorie) of Barrie, Ont., Howard (Andrea) of Neepawa, Man., Gord (Janice), Garry (Renee), Fay (Robert) Stewart, and Cheryl (Tim) Legarie, all of Fort Frances, Ont., and Terry Winik of Kingston, Ont.
She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Jane (Rob) Johnson, Joe (Trisha) Winik, Jon Paul (Carolyn) Winik, Dianne (David) Thompson, Michelle (Gerald) Cousineau, Susan (Andy) Vandenbrand, Nicole (Larry) Duffy, Paul (Charlene) Poirier, David (Kristy) Poirier, Jennifer (Matt) Rae, Lee (Sharon) Winik, Kevin (Sharon L.) Winik, Peter (Shari) Winik, Amber (Dale) Hughes, Roy J. (Megan) Noga, and Keith (Jane) Noga; and 31 great-grandchildren.
She also is survived by her sister, Mildred Ruttan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lena was predeceased by her parents, Oliver and Mary Cholette; husband, Joseph; granddaughter, Ashley Winik; and nine siblings.
A private family interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.
