LELAND “LEE” GEORGE STINSON

August 5, 1944 – January 6, 2026

Leland George Stinson, known to friends and family as “Lee,” and occasionally “Bear,” passed away peacefully at Burnaby Hospital in British Columbia on January 6, 2026, at the age of 81.

Born on August 5, 1944, in Fort Frances, Ontario, Lee was the son of the late Vergil (née Riley) and Lloyd “Bud” Stinson. He was predeceased by his brother Terrance “Terry.” He is survived by his former wife Kirsten (Howard), and their children Christopher (Jennifer) and Jonathan (Amy) and his beloved granddaughter Annika.

Lee was a childhood polio survivor but this did not prevent him from growing into a man of intellect, patience, and a deep-seated desire to help others. Lee’s professional life was devoted to education. From 1969 to 1999, he was a fixture in the Fort Frances school system. He taught high school, special education, library and at Ivik Youth Centre. Lee had a lasting impact on the lives of students, guiding them with a gentle hand and a wealth of knowledge.

Lee’s heart belonged to the water. His home at the end of Reef Point on Rainy Lake was his sanctuary. He was never happier than when he was on his pontoon boat, Chocolate Lab (first Tammy followed by Rika) at his side, navigating the lake he loved.

An avid traveler, Lee drove extensively across North America, at times solo or often with one of his sons. He loved the warmth of the sun, spending many winters in California or Arizona. In 2018, he moved to Burnaby, B.C., to be closer to his sons.

Lee will be remembered as a dedicated educator, a resilient survivor, and a father who would go the extra mile.

A celebration of life will take place in the summer of 2026 on Rainy Lake with details to be determined. To honour Lee’s legacy please consider a donation to the March of Dimes to support survivors of polio.
