LAURA MAY ALMERS

In loving memory of Laura May Almers, 80, a longtime resident of Rainy River, Ont., who passed away at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. on Monday, April 1, 2002.
Laura was born Feb. 1, 1922 in Rainy River to John and Hazel Fadden. She grew up in the Rainy River area and taught school at the Morson Public School in 1942.
During the war, she worked in Toronto in an ammunition factory making shells. She returned to the Rainy River area in 1950, and began work at Arctic Sport Products as an office manager in 1968.
She was united in marriage to Jack Race in 1954, who passed away in 1971. On Aug. 29, 1972, she was united in marriage to William (Willie) Almers.
Laura spent many years as hostess/cook Onboard The Ark. She also loved to work on ceramics and enjoyed teaching it to others. She was a member of the Eastern Star and St. James Anglican Church.
Laura loved to spend time with her family and friends, and always looked forward to their gatherings. She also loved flowers, birdwatching, fishing, and shore lunches.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Jack Race, in 1971; brother-in-law, David Bolen on May 21, 1998; sister, Louise Johnson, on Oct. 15, 2001; and mother-in-law, Nora Almers.
She is survived by her husband, Willie; sisters, Marjorie Bolen and Gladys (Emil) Peloquin; brother, Gerald (Judy) Fadden; brothers-in-law, John Almers, Almar (Lorriane) Almers, and Don Johnson; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bright; and their families.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Rainy River. Fr. Wayne Macintosh will officiate, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River.
Pallbearers will be Jim Miller, William Penney, Terry Hyatt, Morley Bolen, Dwayne Bolen, and David Blight.
Honourary pallbearers will be Cindy Miller, Gordon and Buddy Hannam, Herb and Evelyn Nelson, Jean and John Maki, Ellen and Daryl Gaudry, Vivian and Bob Locking, Betty Blight, Elizabeth Blight, Brian and Linda Almers, Ben and Star Clarke, Joan Ryan, Al and Lorriane Almers, and Charlotte (DeeDee) Mallory.
