With great sadness the family of Larry Donald McMahon announces his passing on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Larry was born April 5, 1944 in Fort Frances to Don and Doris McMahon.
The family later moved to Kenora, Ont.
As a young man, Larry had various jobs, as an apprentice mechanic with the DHO, construction work, and as a truck driver.
In 1969, he married the love of his life, Donna Swanton of Nestor Falls, Ont. In 1970, Larry came with his young family to Nestor Falls to work for BACM construction and decided to stay when he was later hired by Ontario Hydro for line work.
After that, he worked for Northwestern Flying and experienced working up in the Northwest Territories.
The job that gave him the most enjoyment was as a logger. He loved the independence of the logger’s lifestyle and it was the job he missed the most. He also liked carpentry work and enjoyed the challenge of working on older homes or log cabins.
One of Larry’s favourite friends was his remote control. If he sat in his chair, his remote was his buddy: click, click, click.
Despite his gruff exterior, Larry still could make his wife smile. He had a very dry wit that took a while for people to get to know.
Larry was often the first person people met when they came to Nestor Falls. If Larry became your friend, you were his friend for life. He would do anything for anyone if they asked.
He loved his sons and grandsons, and was very proud of their accomplishments.
Larry is survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna; son, Don of Thunder Bay, Ont.; and son, Wade, his wife, Kim, and grandsons, Cody, Brett, and Brady of Fort Frances, Ont.
He also is survived by his mother, Doris; brother, David and wife, Rose, of Kenora, Ont.; sister, Kathy and husband, John Palson, of Redditt, Ont.; sister, Sharon and husband, Shayne MacKinnon, of Dryden, Ont.; brother-in-law, Jim and wife, Sherre Swanton, of Nestor Falls, Ont.; sister-in-law, Wendy Wery of Innisfil, Ont.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Don; and his in-laws, Ed and Gladys Swanton of Nestor Falls, Ont.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Nestor Falls United Church in Nestor Falls, with Rev. Carl Emke officiating.
The honourary pallbearers will be his grandsons, Cody, Brett, and Brady, his brother, Dave McMahon, and brothers-in-law, John Palson and Jim Swanton.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the charity of your choice, in care of Green Funeral Home, Box 427, Fort Frances, Ontario P9A 3M8.
