Larry Charles Tolton, 65, of Nestor Falls, Ont., passed away suddenly at his home Thursday, April 10, 2003. He was born Jan. 14, 1938 in Emo, Ont. to the late Agnes and Rex Tolton.
Larry grew up in Nestor Falls and was one of the first students who attended the Nestor Falls School in 1944.
In his early years, Larry began working at many jobs. These included building, logging, running the family sawmill, learning the art of “putting up ice” in the wintertime, carpentry, and masonry work.
In 1979, Larry and Sarah began running Rex Tolton’s Miles Bay Camp, which Larry had been a part of since the age of 12. He helped his dad to build and develop the camp, and it is still in business 52 years later.
Larry had a love of fishing, being on the lake and sharing his love of the outdoors with the guests, friends, and family. He also had an incredible ability to invent something useful out of bits and pieces.
Through the years, Larry perfected his skills and talents, and enjoyed creating many things for family and friends. Every family member and many friends have at least one “Handcrafted by Larry Tolton” treasure.
Larry built numerous stone fireplaces, not only in Nestor Falls and Northwestern Ontario, but also one in Invermore, B.C.
He was intrigued with the night sky and studied the stars. He had a keen interest in local weather patterns and was often a very reliable source.
Larry was always enthusiastic about everything he did. He was the life of the party, he had an unforgettable laugh, and his smile lit up the room.
Every social gathering that Larry was a part of was filled with music. He could play numerous instruments and loved to sing. He also was always eager to share his impressive memory of local history and fascinated us with many detailed stories.
Larry was a past Master in the Manitou Lodge A.F.&A.M. #631 and also was a Shriner.
In October, 1962, he was married to Lyndawn Rahn and had two daughters. In April, 1982, he was married to Sarah Lintott and had one son.
He will be missed by his loving wife, Sarah; daughter, Cheri Whatley and husband, Paul, and their children, Cherstin and Mason of Fort Frances, Ont.; daughter, Leisa O’Sullivan and husband, Pat, and their sons, Liam and Tomas of Invermere, B.C.; and son, Matthew Tolton and partner, Jenny Miedema, of Devlin, Ont.
Also left to mourn are Vernice Eklund of Nestor Falls, Ont.; three sisters, Janice Ross of Thunder Bay, Ont., Gladys McIntosh and partner, Lorne Branscombe, of William’s Lake, B.C., and Sharon Kropelin and husband, Fred, of Nestor Falls, Ont.; two brothers, Dick Tolton and wife Pat, of Kenora, Ont., and Fred Tolton and partner, Mary Sutton, of Nestor Falls, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Sally and John Padwick and Anne and Chris French; and brother-in-law, Nicholas (Natasha) Lintott of England.
He also is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Larry’s dog, Sassy, also will miss him.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Rex and Agnes Tolton; brother, Clifford; mother-in-law, Josephine Lintott; and grandchildren, Aurora and Samuel.
Family and friends gathered Wednesday, April 16, 2003 for a memorial service at the Nestor Falls United Church, followed by a luncheon at the home of Fred Tolton and Mary Sutton.
In memoriam donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
Larry had a servant’s heart. There was no task too big or too small for him. He was always ready, willing, and able to help anyone in any way that he could. He was always encouraging and supportive.
He had many friends from all walks of life and will always be a great inspiration to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
