Lance Raymond Salchert passed away peacefully February 9, 2021 at his daughters’ home in Winnipeg after a short battle with cancer. Lance was born February 29, 1944, in Mrs. Sparks’ midwifery at Stratton, Ontario.
He is survived by his daughter Krista (Carl) of Winnipeg, and son Steve, of Calgary, proud grandpa to John and Jamie and proud great-grandpa to Jaelyn, all of Winnipeg; brothers Wayne (Betty) of Devlin and Ken (Elizabeth) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and sister Penny Armstrong (Don Bakos) of Dryden; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunties; and his faithful companion Maya. He was predeceased by his parents Ted and Bernie Salchert; and brother Rod Salchert.
Lance grew up in the Stratton, Fort Frances area. In his younger years he worked in the oil and gas fields in Alberta. When the kraft mill was being built, he worked on construction and owned his own truck for a time. He later worked for the Town of Fort Frances for many years till his retirement.
Lance was a stock car driver and enjoyed racing at Emo and other tracks around the country. After he retired from racing, he seldom missed watching a Saturday night race. He was also a long-time member of the International Early Iron Car Club and rarely missed a get-together, parade, or meeting. He was proud of his Dodge Swinger, and you could hear him light up the tires as he left.
Lance enjoyed life, whether at his Hunt Shack, the annual hunting with his kids and nephews Kevin and Sheldon, working in his garden with his bushy weeds, fishing with his buddy Randy, or having coffee and visits with his friends Murnie and Pam. His huge infectious smile will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. A service will be held at a later date.
