Kenneth Robert “Ken” Munn of Fort Frances, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the age of 88. Ken was born on July 24, 1924 in Hamiota, Manitoba to Purl and Anna Munn.
As a young boy his family moved to what was known as the Munn Ranch north of Emo, Ontario.
Ken attended Dobie Township school where he met the love of his life Phyllis Iolene Clark and they were married July 1, 1943 in Emo, Ontario.
Ken was a Corporal in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a parachute rigger during WWII. Upon discharge he entered the Manitoba Tech as a carpenter journeyman. He and Phyllis moved to Fort Frances in April 1946, where Ken started his career as a carpenter, working for John East Co. as an apprentice for 4 years. He was also employed by Wellington Smith Ltd., I. W. Smith, E.E. Doman, Leif Willer, Harry Christiansen and O&M Paper Mill. He started out on his own in 1964 as Ken Munn, later Ken Munn and Son and then Munn Construction Ltd. He was widely known in the area for his garden plowing and grass cutting.
There are not too many businesses and homes in the area that he did not build or repair at some point over his 60 some years in the business.
Ken was an active member of the Orange Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Border Shrine Club and an associate member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He recently received his 65 year pin from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 here in Fort Frances. His passions included hunting, fi shing, spending time at the family cabin on Bad Vermillion Lake and gardening. He shared the love of the outdoors with his children and grandchildren.
Ken is predeceased by his parents Purl and Anna Munn, step-mother Thelma, wife Phyllis, siblings Jay, Theobell, Avery, William, Pearless, Ruth, Ruby and Grace and several nieces and nephews.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his children Donna Law, Terry (Pam) Munn and Dianne (Doug) Hoffman, his grandchildren Trisha, Scott (Amy), and Jessica, half brother and sisters, George, Pauline, Gladys, and Marilyn , brotherin-law Melvin Clark and many, many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Ken’s Life was held Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Royal Canadian Legion.
A graveside service will be held later this spring at the Emo Cemetery.
