Kelly Rae Morrisseau, 35, of Couchiching First Nation, Ont., passed away with family by her side on Monday, April 15, 2013 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Center in Thunder Bay, Ont.
She was born Sept. 21, 1977 in Fort Frances, Ont. and lived at Couchiching First Nation until the age of five, at which time she moved to Winnipeg, Man.
Kelly was a very smart and active youth who received various academic scholarships during her elementary years. She graduated from Tech Voc High School and went on to earn a diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management.
Kelly spent most of her career as a taxi board inspector, then went on to work for Manitoba Housing (Winnipeg office).
During her time in Winnipeg, Kelly was dedicated to raising her daughter, Naomi, forming many special friendships, and spending time with the love of her life, Satwant “Sat” Brar.
Kelly always knew that Couchiching was” home,” and in 2010 she decided to move back to the community.
Kelly was a generous, adventurous, and fun-loving person. She delighted in taking road trips all over North America with friends and family.
She was an avid follower of the Indianapolis Colts, and a faithful fan of Peyton Manning and Wayne Gretzky. She also enjoyed attending Bingo or casinos, and visiting with her friends and family.
Spirituality was an important part of Kelly’s life. As a youth, she attended both church and pow-wow club on a regular basis, and this “passion” for her culture and spirituality continued throughout her adult years.
Kelly loved children and was devoted to family. Her pride and joy was her beloved grandson, Chucky, and one and only daughter, Naomi.
Kelly always will be remembered for her strength, her sense of humour, and her devotion to family.
Kelly is survived by her daughter, Naomi, and grandson, Chucky, of Winnipeg, Man.; mother, Elaine Morrisseau and her partner, Bob, of Winnipeg, Man.; and father, Glen Quinn of Oklahoma.
Also surviving are one sister, Pamela (Darryl) Ross of Couchiching First Nation, Ont.; two brothers, Bradford Morrisseau of Winnipeg, Man. and Kenneth Morrisseau of Couchiching First Nation, Ont.; two paternal sisters, Katie and Nicole; nephews, Evan, Jordan, and Achilles; nieces, Alexandra and Mallory; grandmother, Louise; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her grandfather, Harry Morrisseau; aunt, Phyllis Morrisseau; cousins, Richard (Ricky) Morrisseau Jr. and Michael Kearney; one niece, Saphire; and one nephew, Ethan.
A wake will be held Thursday evening, April 18, 2013 at the multi-use facility at Couchiching First Nation, with parish prayers to be offered at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at Couchiching First Nation. Fr. Francis Pudicherry will officiate, with burial in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery at Couchiching First Nation.
The pallbearers will be Evan Morrisseau, Justin Morrisseau, Dennis Bruyere, Simon Blanchet, Ernie Morrissette, and Nick Mainville.
The honourary pallbearers will be Aleta Bruyere, Tammy Bruyere, Alexandra Morrisseau, Mallory Morrisseau, Sue Anne Campbell, and Carissa Kaminski.
