It is with extreme sadness and love that the family of Katherine (Kay) Duchnicki, 95, recently of Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont., announces her peaceful passing on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011 at Riverside Health Care Facilities, Inc. in Fort Frances.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter, on March 27, 2009.
Kay was born July 24, 1916 in Theodore, Sask. to Andrew and Helen Grynol, and relocated to Fort Frances in 1933.
She married the love of her life, Walter Duchnicki, on June 22, 1941. They had two children, Karen and Michael.
Kay was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic Women’s League.
Her kitchen was her favourite room in the house and she could turn out a meal like no other. Whether it was baking pies and cinnamon rolls in preparation for a family get-together, or putting together a quick late lunch in the evenings when family or friends would drop by to visit and play a few hands of cards, Kay loved to make people feel comfortable and happy when in her house.
Her happiest days were those spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was their “Nana,” and will be remembered for the extensive love and joy she brought to their lives.
Kay will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her daughter, Karen (Randy) Anderson of Alexandria, Va., and son, Michael (Dot) Duchnicki of St. Catharine’s Ont.
Also surviving are her six grandchildren, Scott (Stephanie) Anderson and Ann (Scott) Milton of Charlotte, N.C., Teri (Curtis) Buzzard of Fayetteville, N.C., Cindy (Doug) Davie of Dryden, Ont., and Lorrie (Darren) Schmidt and Carrie (Paul) Taylor of Niagara Falls, Ont.; and 13 great-grandchildren, Samantha, Susanna, and Savannah Anderson, Katie, Caroline, and Anna Buzzard, Alyssa and Ella Milton, Chelsea Schmidt, Megan and Allyson Taylor, and Lisa and Tara Davie.
Also surviving are her brothers-in-law, John Duchnicki and Nick Mutz of Fort Frances, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Amelia (Nick) Mutz of Fort Frances, Ont.; Jackie (Bill) Dobransky of Fort Frances, Ont., Hannah Grynol of Kenora, Ont., Jean Grynol of Winnipeg, Man., and Margaret Grynol of Thunder Bay, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kay also was predeceased by her sister, Irene, and seven brothers, Matt, John, Bill, Jim, Steve, Harry, and Nick.
A funeral mass was held Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Fort Frances, with Fr. Francis Pudicherry officiating.
Interment took place in the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Parish prayers were offered at 7:30 p.m., led by Rev. Deacon Bob Grynol.
The pallbearers were Luke Schill, David Wickstrom, Curtis Wickstrom, Carl Kocuiba, Brill Grynol, and Doug Davie.
The honourary pallbearers were John Duchnicki, Nick Mutz, Don Koczkur, Bill Dobransky, Eddy Grynol, and Buzz Wickstrom.
