Katherine Hazel Neilson passed away peacefully, at the age of 86, on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013 at the Rainy River Health Centre in Rainy River, Ont.
Katherine was born Katherine Hazel Stang on Oct. 20, 1927.
Her early life was lived in the community of Dewart Township, Ont., where she attended school and lived and worked with her family.
On Oct. 22, 1948, Katherine married Arthur Neilson and moved to their home in North Branch, Ont. During her time in North Branch, she cared for her husband until his untimely death in 1977.
She worked around the house caring for her six children. She also spent much time canning fruit and vegetables, which came from her garden and trips for picking blueberries and wild fruit.
She also loved to sew, knit, and crochet for her family and friends.
She was a member of the United Church and the U.C.W. when the church existed in North Branch.
Katherine was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; her parents; brothers, George, Billy, and Dale; and sister, Edith.
She is survived by four daughters, Judy, Lorraine, Kathy, and Wendy; two sons, Marty and Dan; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six step-great-granchildren.
Also surviving is her brother, Wilmer.
Katherine lived in the family home in North Branch until she moved to the Morley Manor in Stratton, Ont. in 1998. In May, 2013, she moved to the Rainy River Health Centre, where she lived until her final days.
During her life, Katherine always was a hard worker. Her enjoyments centered around her vegetable garden, her flower garden, and watching her birds.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the North Branch Community Hall, followed by interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery.
Fr. Larry Winslow officiated.
