It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved June Morrison (nee Ottertail) of Lac La Croix First Nation, Ont., who passed away suddenly on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ont. with her family at her side.
June was born Sept. 20, 1946 in Fort Frances, Ont. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and cousin.
June grew up in Lac La Croix, where she resided a great part of her life, and where she met and married her husband of 45 years.
June enjoyed many things, the utmost important were the times she spent with her immediate family. She was a very strong, kind, loving, and devoted Anishinabekwe, who strongly believed in walking the path of her traditional Anishinabe beliefs and practices.
Despite numerous health problems June battled with, she remained strong and resilient by fully trusting in her Creator.
June was a hard-working individual; she worked many years for Zup’s Camp and Campbell’s Cabins, and also for Lac La Croix First Nation. She also enjoyed going to pow-wows and she was an avid Bingo player.
Through her work and enjoyments, June attracted many people with her kind, pleasant, and humorous personality. She will be missed by all the people she has touched.
June leaves behind her husband, Albert Morrison Sr. She also will be sadly missed by her sons, Dennis Morrison Sr. (Roseanne), Jeffrey Morrison (Crystal), and Albert Morrison Jr., of Lac La Croix, Roger Morrison of Lac La Croix First Nation, and Dave Morrison of Winnipeg, Man.; and daughters, Darlene Morrison (Barry) and Kim Morrison, of Lac La Croix, Sharon Morrison of Fort Frances, Ont., Shannon Earnest (Mike) of International Falls, Mn., and Joy Morrison of Atikokan, Ont.
June leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Dennis Morrison Jr. (Whitney), Christopher Big George, Daniel Morrison (Britney), Tami Morrison (Joel Watson), Kristen Boshey, Shyla Morrison, Kendra, Cassandra, and James, Gunner, Jordan, and Tristan Morrison, Kristen, Bruce, and Dayton Geyshick, Trevor Boshey, Trisha Boshey, and Tucker Morrison, Pernell Ottertail Jr. and Ashton Morrison, Christine, Jason Ottertail, Felicia, Dylan Morrison, Kayla, Brandon Earnest, and Madeline Sadewasser, Jesse and Jana Morrison; and her great-grandchildren, Keagan Morrison, Damion Morrison, and Kayleigh and Tianna Walton.
Also mourning the enormous loss are her father, George Ottertail of Fort Frances; brothers, Jerry Ottertail (Sheila) and Len Ottertail of Lac La Croix, Fred Ottertail (Camilla) of Seine River, Wesley Ottertail of Fort Frances, and Eugene Ottertail; and her sisters, Alice Ottertail (Howard), Joyce Mainville (Bill) of International Falls, Mn., and Myrna Ottertail.
June also leaves behind many nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
June was predeceased by her mother, Clara Ottertail; sister, Janet Oshawe (Angus); and brother, Ernest Ottertail.
A traditional burial will be held Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Lac La Croix First Nation, officiated by her special and trusted friend, Peter White.
A wake will be held Wednesday evening, May 7, 2008 at the Lac La Croix First Nation roundhouse.
