JUDY KAUFMAN

It is with great sadness we mourn the passing of Judy Kaufman who passed away December 8, 2021, after a lengthy illness. Judy was born in Ottawa on December 19,1958, to Rae and Theresa Reid. Judy attended French school in Ottawa and went on to Algonquin College to study forestry. At this time, Judy jointed a very small group of women working in forestry. Her first job brought her to Ignace, Ontario, with the Ministry of Natural Resources. In 1982, she moved with Eric Kaufman to Fort Frances to work for Boise Cascade Canada in the woodland division. Judy held many positions with the company and retired in 2013 as the regeneration forester on the Crossroute Forest and was very proud of the new forests she helped establish.

While working summers for the MNR she would travel during the winter months. Judy was an avid traveler and at a young age backpacked through Europe, Australia, and the Cook Islands. She loved the lake and enjoyed many summers at the cabin on Hopkin’s Bay with Ralph Hill and their two children, along with Judy’s daughter, Corie. When she was not on Rainy Lake, she was hiking and camping in many of the National Parks in Canada, U.S. and New Zealand. She loved adventure, animals, the Packers, and the occasional clever prank.

Judy was predeceased by her parents Ray Reid and Theresa McCaffrey; sister Carolyn Leclair; aunts Aleverda and Velma Reid. She is survived by her partner Jim Ash; children Corie Kaufman of Sarnia, Kurtis Hill (Katie Yurick) of Fort Frances and Chelsea Hill of Val Marie, Sask. Judy is also survived by her sisters Margaret Hagen (late Glen Hagen) of Ottawa, Cathy West (John) of Ottawa and brother-in law Ken LeClair of Ottawa; along with many nieces and nephews. During her illness, Judy enjoyed family gatherings and visits with her close friends, all of whom provided comfort and unfaltering support for several months.

Honorary pallbearers are Becky Kupila, Fiona Ryle, Tanya Wilson, Janice Flewelling, Bruce Nichols, and Gary Saurer.

A celebration of life will be held at the Legion Hall on Sunday, December 12,at 11:00 a.m. Light lunch will be served, proof of vaccinations mandatory.
