JOYCE D. (WOLDEN) ASPLUND

Joyce D. (Wolden) Asplund, 81, of Rainycrest Long Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence on Tuesday, April 14, 2009.
Joyce was born Aug. 18, 1927 in Fort Frances to the late August and Macey Mertens.
She worked at many different jobs throughout her life, and finally retired from Canada Post in 1987 after 12 years of service.
She was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church and enjoyed attending the services. She was very dedicated to her church, and always was volunteering for any duties or events that occurred.
Her last years were difficult as Alzheimer disease meant she needed special care. She moved to the Rainycrest Long Term Care in December, 2003, where she was able to receive this care.
On Jan. 2, 1946, Joyce was united in marriage to Ernest Wolden, who predeceased her on June 23, 1973.
On July 28, 1987, she was united in marriage to J.E. Merlin Asplund, who predeceased her on July 23, 2003.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Nadine Rickards of Calgary, Alta., and Nancy (Earl) Lockman, Nyla (D. Bruce) Henry, and Noreen (Gordie) Melville, all of Fort Frances, Ont.
Also surviving are her grandchildren, Trevor (Tracy) Rickards, Todd (Carie) Rickards, Anna (Nathan) Dmytriw, Tara (Kevin) Roen, and Kyle Melville, great-grandchildren, Danica Rickards, and Maygen and Ashley Roen; sister, Marvel Ricard of Fort Frances, Ont.; brother, Jack (Maureen) Mertens of Nipigon, Ont.; and Merlin’s sons, Micheal (Barb) Asplund of Fort Frances, Ont. and Gary (Elizabeth) Asplund of Aurora, Ont.
Funeral services took place Monday, April 20, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Frances, with Pastor Brian Keffer officiating.
Interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.
