Joseph (Kaatag) Shebagegit, 69, of Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2007 at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ont.
He was born Oct. 4, 1938 in Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation. He lived in the area most of life.
Joseph loved to be outdoors; fishing, hunting, and trapping. He worked as a commercial fisherman and trapper for many years.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He often took them fishing and hunting; sharing his vast knowledge of the outdoors.
Joseph leaves behind his wife, Beverly; children, Joseph Jr., Chris (Margaret), Brian, Lisa (Darwin), and Lynn; grandchildren, Cody (Chiata), Evelyn, Kyle, Riley, Devyn, Brandyn, Joshua, Darren (Sarah), Serene, and Corey; and great-granddaughter, Aaliyah.
Also surviving are his brothers, Tom (Liza) and Raymond; sisters, Alice Johnson and Jean Woods (Art); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
He was predeceased by his father, Tom; mother, Roseanna; and brother, Frank.
A wake was held Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007 from 3 p.m. at the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation gymnasium.
A traditional funeral service was held Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007 at 10 a.m. at the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation gymnasium, with Elder Joe Morrison officiating.
Cremation will take place at the Rainy River Crematory in International Falls, Mn. following the service.
The pallbearers were Marcel Horton, Joe Jack, Darryl Johnson, Burt Woods, Derek Shebagegit, and Donald Copenace.
