It is with great regret and sadness that the family announces the passing of Joseph Big George (Mizhakii-inini) at the Emo Health Centre in Emo, Ont. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008.
Joseph was born on Lake of the Woods on Sept. 5, 1931 and spent his entire life in Rainy River District.
Joseph was a respected elder in the First Nation communities in the district and will be sadly missed by the entire community.
In his earlier years, Joseph was chief of his home community then known as Big Island First Nation, and was instrumental in the relocation of the community to its present home on the shores of Lake of the Woods.
Joseph also was one of the founding members of Weechi-it-te-win Family Services.
Joseph was predeceased by both of his parents and all of his brothers and sisters; as well as his loving wife, Sarah.
Joseph is survived by his son, Carl (Mary-Ann); along with grandsons, Carl Jr. and Brendan and granddaughters, Shanna and Cheyenne.
Joseph also is survived by his stepson, James Morrison and his children, Thomas, Marshall, Laurie, and Sarah. Joseph’s many great-grandchildren also will miss him.
A wake was held Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Big Grassy Community Hall in Morson, Ont., with a traditional service held Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008 at 10 a.m., followed by interment in Morson Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Carl Big George Jr, Brendan Big George, Thomas Morrison, Robert Handorgan, Robert Morrison, Tim Archie, and Vernon Tuesday.
