It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Vanderaa of Emo, beloved husband of Ann Vanderaa, on Thursday, November 11, 2021, at the Emo hospital, surrounded by his family.

John was born on April 25, 1931 in Den Dungen, Holland. He had seven brothers and three sisters. In 1948 John came to Canada with most of his family and settled in Homewood, Manitoba. It was when his family moved to St. Eustache that he met Ann at the age of 20. John then moved to Melita, Manitoba and worked on the farm of an elderly couple. John and Ann were married in 1957. Ann then joined John in Melita before moving to Winnipeg in 1959. John worked at Deer Lodge Veteran’s Hospital as an orderly. They welcomed their first child Marty in 1961 and John then transferred to the Fort Frances hospital when Marty was three weeks old. They settled in Emo and purchase their farm on Lash Road in 1963. They then welcome four more children – Anthony, Tim, Rick and Jackie. John moved to the Emo Hospital and worked there for 29 years until his retirement at age 65.

John enjoyed his years farming and spending time with his neighbours, farming community and coffee shop buddies. He and Ann loved to go for rides in the country and stopping for ice cream along the way. They were married for 64 years. John always had a joke to tell and loved to tease his grandkids.
