John Robert Madison, 91, passed away Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at Pinecrest Home for the Aged.
He was born April 22, 1912 at his parents’ homestead near Golden Vale, Sask. He retired in June, 1974 after 39 years of teaching, the last 29 of those in the Kenora Lakehead High School.
John married Elva Kennett of Fort Frances, Ont. in June, 1942. They were blessed with three sons, Dale (Marlene) of Keewatin, Glen (Christine) of LacLu, and Gerry (Darlene) of Winnipeg; as well as also four grandsons, Todd (Laura and daughter, Cypress), Bradley (Adena), Barry, and Niles, and two granddaughters, Tasha and Mackenzie.
John also leaves a brother, Jim, of Toronto, Ont.; a sister-in-law, Janice Marshall of Fort Frances, Ont.; and many much loved nieces and nephews.
He was a member of the Keewatin Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and served as a Master there.
John also was an avid outdoorsman; he loved gardening, hunting, fishing, and lumbering. He was very proud of the wood he milled on his own. He spent many of his retirement years in his workshop creating wooden gifts for his many relatives and friends.
John and Elva spent many happy summer holidays with their family, many friends, and realtives at their camp on Jackfish Lake. After their retirement, they enjoyed winter outings there, too, with their snowmachines, snowshoes, and skis.
John also loved travelling, and he and Elva made good use of their camper during holidays.
John will be deeply missed by his loving wife, his immediate family, and his many close relatives and friends. He also will be fondly remembered by the dozens of Keewatin and Kenora residents who passed through his hands during his many teaching years.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Keewatin United Church.
As expressions of sympathy, in memoriam donations to the Alzheimer Society or to Pinecrest Home for the Aged would be appreciated.
