John “Harley” Gillies passed away peacefully on Jan. 26, 2010 at St. Josephs Hospital in Courtenay, B.C. after a courageous struggle with cancer.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Mabel; son, Fran; daughter, Judy; sisters, Shirley Nedland of Dawson Creek, B.C. and Gladys “Nanny” Smith of Emo, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in British Columbia and Ontario.
Harley was predeceased by his parents, Jack Gillies (May, 1986) and Gladys Gillies (August, 1963); his sister, Ardell Brigham (July, 2005); and brothers-in-law, Bill Smith (March, 1971), Gordon Nedland (July, 1983), and Marvin Brigham (February, 1991).
Like many, Harley left Rainy River District to seek employment and really enjoyed the change of climate in British Columbia. In their home in Courtenay, there is a beautiful view of the mountains and he once said he didn’t look at them as he didn’t want to be reminded of the snow.
He and Mabel carefully manicured their beautiful home and yard, and it was a true delight to see.
Harley was a kind person and a man of few words.
He will be sadly missed and never forgotten by all who knew and loved him.
