John Elyk, 53, of 235 Scott St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away suddenly at his residence Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999.
He was born Jan. 15, 1946 in Fort Frances. John lived in Fort Frances all his life, and had worked as a labourer for various construction firms for about 20 years until retiring during the 1980s.
He also was very well-liked at the courthouse, where he worked in maintenance for about five years.
John will be remembered by family and friends as quite the guitar player and entertainer, and also for having a great sense of humour. He loved the outdoors and like to hunt in his early years, and go fishing whenever he could.
He was predeceased by his mother, Lena Budko; sisters, Dora Elyk and Mary Boudreau; and nephew, Wade Boudreau.
John will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Debbie Elyk of Calgary, Alta. and Beryl and husband, Ken Pocock, of Fort Frances, Ont.; two sons, Bryce Elyk of Blackhawk, Ont., and Mike Maxton and wife, Rachel, of Fort Frances, Ont.; and five grandchildren, Zachery and Conner Pocock, and Evan, Cassidy, and Levi Maxton.
He also is survived by two brothers, Alex Gawrylak and wife, Verna, and Mike Elyk and wife, Bernice, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; one sister, Helen Audette of Fort Frances, Ont.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
An open house in his honour will be held at the Windsor Room of the Rainy Lake Hotel in Fort Frances on Friday, Dec. 3, 1999 from 2 until 4 p.m. All friends and family are welcome.
