Joe Roach passed away at his home in Sault Ste. Marie with his wife, Esther, by his side on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born in May, 1935 in Garden River First Nation, and was raised by his older sister, brothers, and father.
He went to school there and started working at a young age as a member of the Iron Workers Union Local 786 of Sault Ste. Marie.
Joe had dual citizenship so he worked in both the United States and Canada in some high places, like the International Bridge bordering Michigan and Ontario.
He was an iron worker most of his working years, retiring at age 60.
Joe was predeceased by his mother, Clara Roach, in 1942; his father, William Roach, in 1968; brothers, James, Chuck, Mike, John, and Maurice; and sister, Gladys Boissoneau.
He is survived by his wife, Esther, of Sault Ste. Marie; brother, Pat, of Fort Frances, Ont.; and a sister, Elaine Lassage, of Garden River First Nation.
Joe was a quiet man with a big heart, the kind of guy you don’t meet every day.
He will be missed by his friends and relatives, many nieces and nephews, from Garden River, Fort Frances, Winnipeg, B.C., and Moosonee, Ont.
