JOAN ‘TEDDY’ BONE

Joan Ruth (“Teddy”) Bone, 90, of Burriss, Ont., passed away Saturday, March 14, 2015 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
She was born Oct. 3, 1924 in Edmonton, Alta. to William and Elizabeth Howey, the only daughter of four children.
She attended school in Edmonton, but was forced to drop out and work to help raise her two surviving brothers after the early death of her mother and after her older brother’s plane was shot down overseas.
Teddy was married to Larry Bone in Edmonton and widowed in 1965 at Fort Frances.
She was predeceased by her parents; brother, William Howey; brother, Doug Howey; infant son, Ronald; and husband, Larry.
Teddy is survived by brother, Jack Howey; daughters, Kathy Sadergaski and Elaine Aveyard (Glen); son, Bill (Nancy); grandchildren, Shelly (Carey), Larry (Michelle), Tawnya (Joe), Christie (Al), Kevin (Toey), Jonathan, Danny (Lindsey), Keith (Tabotha), and Jennifer (Don); great-grandchildren, Carter, Jaymee, Emma, Abbey, Austen, Casche, Carson, Emily, Madison, and Brooklyn; as well as her “adopted daughter,” Judy.
After the death of her husband, Teddy raised her three children on her own. She worked at Lakehead Freightways, P and B Cartage, Superior Propane, Lands and Forests (MNR), and as a dispatcher for the OPP until her retirement at age 62.
She also carried on an active social life.
In her youth, she was a competitive speed skater, and her baseball team made it to the provincial championships.
Teddy was a certified lifeguard. An accomplished bowler with many trophies, she represented Fort Frances leagues in many tournaments across Canada.
She also was a gifted painter and photographer, winning many contests, and later took up wood carving. These and other activities garnered her a wealth of friends from all over the continent.
Never without pets, Teddy raised canaries and white mice, as well as goldfish kept in a beautiful pond and rock garden she built herself. Never without at least one dog by her side and even cats later on that she adopted—all of them living long under her loving care.
Her greatest love was her horses, having her own and riding others on pack trips that covered more than 1,000 miles of the Colorado Rockies wilderness.
At the age of 70, she fulfilled her dream of having a paso fino. A breed known for its smooth ride, “Bribon” carried her safely for more than 20 years until she was in her 80s.
They are together again. Happy trails, Mom.
A celebration of Teddy’s life will be held Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Devlin Hall in Devlin, Ont.
Interment will take place at a later date.
