It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Margaret Hawley, age 94, of Fort Frances, Ontario.
With her family by her side, Joan passed away peacefully at the LaVerendrye General Hospital on June 22, 2022.
Joan was born on May 30, 1928, in Brockville, Ontario, to James and Kathleen Buist. She was united in marriage to Stanley Hawley on December 27, 1950. She gave up her career as a registered nurse to start raising her family with the arrival of her first child. Since her husband Stan worked for Ontario Hydro, the family was always on the move, resulting in all five of her children being born in different towns. Finally moving to Fort Frances and calling it home in 1968, Joan began working at Lerman’s Department Store and then The Clinic Pharmacy until her retirement.
She loved her summers at the cabin on the North Arm of Rainy Lake where she would relax and enjoy her favourite pastime of reading. Joan also loved to walk and swim, and of course her weekly outing with friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Stan; eldest son Jim; sister Kay; and parents James and Kathleen.
Joan will be greatly missed by her children Linda Smith (David), Brenda Allen (Wayne), Gerry (Dori) and Shelley Douglas (Bill); grandchildren Christina (Andrew), Jason (Melanie), Jennifer (Ryan), Jacob (Kate), Breanne ( Derek) and Abigail; great-grandchildren Rowan, Coby, Troy, Will, Ross and Finn; sisters Dorothy Saunders and Shirley Reynolds; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held.
If friends so desire in memoriam donations may be made to the Friends of the Library or Riverside Health Care Foundation-Palliative Care.
