It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Jerry ‘Moot’ Smith who was called home to be with the Lord on January 1, 2025, at the age of 68. Jerry was born on October 20, 1956, in Fort Frances, Ont., to Harry Smith and Jean (Johnson) Smith.
Jerry was a devoted son, brother, uncle, friend, and a faithful servant of God, whose life was a testament to grace, kindness, and love.
Jerry is survived by his sister Norma; brother Ray Smith (Fern); brother Carl Smith (Bridget); brother Lorne Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Harry Smith and mother Jean Smith.

Jerry’s unwavering faith and gentle spirit were an inspiration to everyone blessed to know him. Jerry was raised on the shores of Clearwater Lake, where his love for nature was nurtured through countless days of fishing, hunting, and exploring the wilderness. A residential school survivor, Jerry displayed resilience and a deep connection to the land throughout his life. His work life was as diverse as it was meaningful. He was a caretaker of South Portage in Clearwater. He worked as a forest firefighter and then later tree planter, contributing to the preservation of the natural beauty he cherished. Known as an animal whisperer, he had a unique gift for taming wild creatures, including his beloved whiskey jacks, and was always the first to feed animals that didn’t belong to him, showcasing his boundless kindness. Known for his hospitality, quirky humour, and love of collecting small treasures, he was a friend to everyone. He will be remembered for his big heart, love for nature, the joy he brought to others and ‘Moots Mountain’.
