James Steele “Jim” Munro, 83, of Fort Frances, Ont. and formerly of Dance Township, Ont., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 at La Verendrye General Hospital.
He was born Sept. 6, 1915 in Dance Township to the late John Munro and Jean Steele.
Jim had lived most of his life in Rainy River District and had farmed in the area. He also had worked for George and Vernon Armstrong, as well as for many years with the Dept. of Highways, from which he retired at age 64.
He enjoyed curling, bowling, hunting, fishing, and playing cards. He was a member of the curling club, the bowling association, and the International Order of Oddfellows Cascade Lodge #351.
He is survived by his children, Fred, Jack and wife, Geraldine, all of Atikokan, Keith and wife, Betty, of Dance Township, Don and wife, Joyce, of Blackhawk, Ont., and James and wife, Mary, and Janice and husband, John Ross, all of Thunder Bay, Ont.
Also surviving is his wife, Emily and her children, Faye and husband, Paul Hay, of Thunder Bay, Sheryl and husband, Edward Kresse, of Regina, Sask., and Larry Gustafson and wife, Noreen, of Fort Frances; and five step-children, Ralph McGauley and wife, Doris, of Oakville, Ont., Rodney McGauley and wife, Marlene, Marles and husband, Darwin Matheson, and Dennis McGauley and wife, Lorraine, all of Thunder Bay, and LaDonna Klem of Fort Frances; 36 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Sutherland of Forest, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Ellen, on Jan. 30, 1958, and his second wife, Iris, on Dec. 20, 1975. He also was predeceased by his parents, John and Jean; a sister, Christina, in January, 1937; and two grandsons, Kelly Munro on Feb. 6, 1987, and Bradley Matheson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at 3 p.m. at Green Funeral Home. Rev. Ron Hagerty officiated, with interment in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends visited with the family on Friday evening at Green Funeral Home. An International Order of Oddfellows Cascade Lodge #351 memorial service was held at 7:30 p.m.
Pallbearers were Cory Munro, Toby Munro, Scott Munro, Eugene Ross, Jonathan Munro, Brent Hay, Wes Caul, and Marvin Caul.
Honourary pallbearers were Derward Angus, Leonard Angus, Angus Hyatt, Joe Hodge, Jack Mills, Jim Witherspoon, Norman Steele, Bill Steele, and George Armstrong.
