James John Carson McQuaker passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at the Emo Health Centre in Emo, Ont. in his 93rd year.
He was born Sept. 5, 1920 in Pattullo Township, Ont. on the farm his parents, William and Annie McQuaker, homesteaded.
He attended Pattullo #8 School. He met Iris Corrine Pearson when she came to teach at that school in 1943. They were married in Emo on Dec. 29, 1944.
Carson and Iris settled on the family farm, raising their family. In addition to farming, Carson continued logging, and driving truck and school bus. And for several summers, he was a road foreman building bridges and doing road construction for the Department of Highways.
Carson was community-minded, serving as a municipal councillor, a school board member for Pattullo, a livestock kill evaluator, and a fire warden. He also was proud to be a founding member of the Rainy River Cattlemen’s Association and continued to participate with the Stratton sales barn as long as he was able.
To spend time with his family, friends, and neighbours, sharing stories and a cup of coffee, was the cornerstone of his day. We all will remember how much he enjoyed driving in his pick-up with the farm dog, “Shadow.”
Carson is survived by his children, Dixie (Wayne Watson), Norman (Jinx Stus), Harold (Shirley), Jim (Susan), Beth (Dennis Brown), Robin (Joanne), Pete (Marlene), Susan (Harold Norlund), and Bud (Donna).
He has 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
He also is survived by three sisters-in-law, Dixie Pidlubny, Irene McQuaker, and Donna Pearson; and also will be missed by nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours, and his faithful companion, “Shadow.”
Carson was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Iris, and two sons, Laurie and David.
He also was predeceased by his parents; his siblings, Margaret McLeod, William, Mary Olson, Hazel Morken, Isobel Miles, Norman, Jean, and Ron; one granddaughter, Kari; one great-granddaughter, Miami; and one great-great-grandson, Kellen.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 29, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Pattullo Cemetery, with interment following and then a luncheon at the Millennium Hall in Stratton, Ont.
Lay pastor Carolyn Kreger officiated.
The pallbearers were Carson’s six sons.
The honourary pallbearers were Mike Neilson, Roy Jolicouer, Gary Advent, Doug Nielson, Clark Nielson, Alvin Alexander, Bob Brown, and Stan Olson.
