JAMES HORTON

James Horton, 72, of Mantiou Rapids First Nation, Ont., passed away Thursday, May 21, 1998 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
He was born Sept. 6, 1925 in Manitou Rapids First Nation to the late Jim and Mary Horton.
James was raised in Manitou, and on May 1, 1943, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces, where he served overseas in Britain, the central Mediterranean area, and in northwest Europe. He was decorated with several medals.
Upon his discharge from the armed forces in 1946, he returned to Manitou, where in 1947 he was united in marriage to Imelda Oshie.
James worked in Northern Ontario and northern Minnesota in road construction, diamond drilling, and logging before doing carpentry for the last 20 years. In 1986, he retired, and spent his time enjoying fishing, hunting, and attending and singing at pow-wows.
James loved spending time with family, telling stories, especially with his grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sons, Stanley and Michael Horton; one daughter, Mary Jane Oshie; one grandson, Trevor Joel Oshie; one brother, Jack Horton; and two sisters, Irene and Leone.
James is survived by his wife, Imelda Horton of Manitou Rapids First Nation, Ont.; five children, Delbert Horton and wife, Laura, of Manitou Rapids First Nation, Ont., Douglas Horton and Darlene Morrisseau of Fort Frances, Ont., Dona Fiddler of Thunder Bay, Ont., Anna and husband, Bruce Lucachick, of International Falls, Mn., and Audrey Horton and Craig Jourdain of Manitou Rapids First Nation, Ont.; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one aunt, Agnes Speaker of Manitou Rapids First Nation, Ont.; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A traditional burial ceremony was held Monday, May 25, 1998 in the morning at the Manitou Rapids Community Centre. Elder Charles Nelson officiated, with interment in the Manitou First Nation Burial Grounds.
A wake was held Sunday evening at the Manitou Rapids Community Centre.
Pallbearers were Stanley Horton, Doug Horton Jr., Lionel Horton, Byron Horton, Derek Horton, Jamie Leonard, and Frank James Lucachick.
Honourary pallbearers were Harold McGinnis Sr., Tom Medicine Sr., Ed Medicine, Peter Medicine, Joe Medicine, Ben Brown Sr., Marcel Wynne, and Terry Grove.
