JACQUELINE ROSTE

On March 31, 2018, Jackie Roste passed away peacefully at Grove Park Home in Barrie, Ont.
Mary Jacqueline Roste, known as Jackie and affectionately known as “Cookie” by her cousins and high school friends, was born on Aug. 13, 1941 in Macklin, Sask. to Grace (nee Crowe) and Jacob Shucard, along with brother, Gerald Schucard.
Shortly after Jackie’s birth, the family moved to Fort Frances, Ont., where Jackie lived most of her life. It was in Fort Frances that Jackie met Wayne Roste and they were married.
Sherri felt that while growing up, she was the luckiest girl because she had such a young mom with whom she shared similar interests.
Jackie had a number of occupations during her life. In her teens and early 20s, she worked at the Rijnol Gift Shop, the Royal Theatre, and the CIBC. When her children were in school, Jackie worked as a bookkeeper for Wayne’s parents in their bakery business known as Roste’s Maple Leaf Bakery.
In later years, Jackie and Wayne purchased a bait and tackle, grocery, and gas station business known as Roste’s Bait Service, which they operated for many years. Jackie was a bookkeeper and, along with Wayne, she managed the business.
Wayne kept the business supplied with bait and tackle for the many local and American fishermen who stopped en route to the many lakes in the area. Jackie spent many an apprehensive evening waiting for Wayne to return home with minnows in his Super Cub Floatplane . . . from his fly-in trips to the countless northern lakes.
In later years, Jackie worked at Johnson’s Jewellers and Betty’s in downtown Fort Frances.
In 1993, Wayne passed away and a part of Jackie died that day, too.
Some years later, Jackie and Scott embarked on a new journey. They decided to make the move to Barrie to help with the care of the twins while Sherri and Stephen were at work. For many years, at the end of June, Jackie and Scott would drive back to Fort Frances and stay up at Wayne’s parents’ home on Hopkins Bay, lending a helping hand as required.
Jackie also had many friends and family she would visit during the summer months in the Fort.
For the last number of years, Jackie lived in Grove Park Home in Barrie.
Throughout her life, Jackie always was a very capable person. She had a very strong work ethic and often worked long hours at the family business, as needed. When she set her mind to doing something, she would see it to its fruition.
She was very loyal and there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do to help her family.
Jackie also was very passionate about assisting those who were less fortunate than she was. She always was very friendly to people she passed by each day, greeting them with a smile and a friendly word.
The family takes comfort in knowing that Jackie is now at complete peace with Wayne and family members that have passed before her.
Jackie is survived by her son, Scott, of Barrie, Ont.; daughter, Sherri and husband, Stephen Holloway, and grandchildren, Rebecca and Jonathan, all of Barrie, Ont.; Wayne’s brothers and sister, Daniel Rostie, Anita Rostie, Barry Roste (Lynn), and Joan Anderson; and nieces and nephews, Cynthia, Glen, David, Chris, Brooke, Cassidy, Joleigh, and Todd, along with their spouses and their children.
Jackie was predeceased by her husband, Wayne, and his parents, Isabel and Glen Roste; parents, Grace and Jacob Shucard; brother, Gerald Schucard; sister-in-law, Gladys Schucard; and brother-in-law, Les Anderson.
