Jacqueline Ann Nelson, 34, of Northwest Bay First Nation, Ont., passed away suddenly at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004.
She was born June 24, 1969 in Fort Frances. Jacqueline attended elementary school in Devlin and later Fort Frances High School. She then graduated from Seven Generations Secondary School, attended the University of Manitoba, and later transferred to Sault College, where she graduated in Business Administration with honours.
On Aug. 10, 2001, she was united in marriage to Jeffery Nelson.
Jacqueline worked as a secretary/receptionist for the Naicatchewenin First Nations for eight years. She assisted with various initiatives, and represented the health and education committee for the band.
Jacqueline enjoyed playing Bingo, watching Borderland Thunder hockey games, and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Jacqueline also was devoted to her husband, and loyal to her family and close friends.
The family includes her mother, Mabel Cyr; grandparents, Roderick and Lucy Cyr; husband, Jeffery Nelson; and sister, Pam Cyr and her children, Deanna, Christina, Shane, Jonah, and Christian, all of Northwest Bay First Nation, Ont.
Also surviving are her uncles, Buddy, Norman, and Wilfred (Dorothy) and their children, Wilf Cyr Jr., Shane Wood, and Charles Wood, all of Bemidji, Mn.; and aunt, Mary (Ray) Jourdain and their children, Carolyn, Gary, and Brad (Carla) and their children, Makayla and Dawson, all of Couchiching First Nation, Ont.
Extended family members include Mary Irene Smith, Terry Smith, Colleen and Wayne Smith, Sharon Smith, Rosie Cyr, Roseanne Councillor, Marcella (Clarence) Cyr, Russell Cyr, Raymond (Doreen) Cyr, and Fred Major; mother-in-law, Darlene Nelson of Toronto, Ont.; father-in-law, Lorne Nelson Sr. of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; brothers-in-law, Lorne Nelson (Carol) of Dryden, Ont., and Timothy Nelson of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; and sister-in-law, Terri deFreitas and husband, Rodney, of Toronto, Ont.
She was predeceased by her great aunt, Ethel Cyr; brother-in-law, Herman Green; aunt, Elsie Cyr; and great uncles, Louis Cyr and Johnny Cyr.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 1, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Northwest Bay First Nation Gymnasium in Northwest Bay First Nation. Brother Larry LacQuette officiated, with interment in the Northwest Bay First Nation Cemetery.
A wake was held Sunday evening at Northwest Bay First Nation.
Pallbearers were Lorne Nelson, Tony Marinaro, Randy Councillor, Terry Smith, Wayne Smith, Ed Yerxa, Trevor Smith, Wilfred Cyr, Darren Smith, and Sean Councillor.
Honourary pallbearers were Colleen Smith, Sharon Smith, Ida Linklater, Darlene Smith, Jocelyn Johnson, Janice Smith, Joyce Smith, Mona Morrisseau, Phyllis Ulrich, and Iline Yerxa.
