ISLA LOUISE CORNELL

Mrs. Isla Cornell (nee Pope), 97, passed away peacefully at Rainycrest Home for the Aged in Fort Frances, Ont. on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2005.
Born on July 17, 1907 near Devlin, Ont., Isla was the oldest daughter of William and Celia Pope of La Vallee, Ont. She was raised on the now Kim Cornell farm north of La Vallee, which her father first homesteaded in 1897.
After attending La Vallee Public School and Fort Frances High School, she married Garnet Cornell in 1927.
She worked in the La Vallee Creamery as a bookkeeper for many years and was actively involved in her husband’s Massey Ferguson dealership in La Vallee.
She and Garnet retired to their home in La Vallee in 1975, though both continued to help out on the Pope homestead for many years that was owned by their son, Gordon Cornell.
Isla was actively involved with the La Vallee United Church, United Church Women’s League, and the La Vallee Community Hall. She was very skilled at needlework, knitting, and crocheting, and often made sweaters and quilts for her grandchildren.
Isla was predeceased by her husband, Garnet; and brothers, Alex and Jim Pope.
She is survived by her children, Gordon Cornell (Jeannine) of La Vallee, Ont., Dorothy Weir (Anthony) of Alberton, Ont., and Jim Cornell (Pat) of Ridgeway, Ont.; grandchildren, Deborah Cornell (Bill) and Kim Cornell (Pat) of La Vallee, Ont., Doug Cornell (Janet) of Airdrie, Alta., Lori McKay (Greg) of Alberton, Ont., Todd Weir (Denise) of Fort Frances, Ont., Andrea Cornell (Gary) of Mississauga, Ont., and Alison Cornell (Kelly) of Toronto, Ont.
Also surviving are her sisters, Elsie Lloyd of Strathmore, Alta., and Gordie Redding (Burdette) of Port Townsend, Wash.; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and special friends, Florence Drennan and Isla Hayes of Fort Frances, Ont.
Isla was a loved and respected family member and friend who will be missed by all, and her stoic example and memory will endure.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will follow at a later date (perhaps spring). Interment will be in the Devlin Cemetery.
