We sadly announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Herman Leo Guimond.
Herman passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the age of 85, at Rainycrest Long Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont. with his family by his side.
Herman was born April 13, 1923 on Couchiching First Nations to the late Louise and Philippe Guimond. He was always proud of his First Nation heritage.
Herman was known to his family and friends as “Shag,” a loving nickname he cherished from the time he was a young boy. To his friends and co-workers at the papermill, he was known as “Giz.”
He attended the local Indian residential school, where life would bring affective revelations and stories to come.
Shortly after his graduation from Grade 8, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces under the Winnipeg Rifles. Herman served overseas in World War II.
There were many stories—his most cherished being wedded to a beautiful Dutch girl from Zeist, Holland, our mother and grandmother, Geertruida (Trudy) Nesselaar, on Dec. 28, 1945.
Herman liked to claim two birthdays; his second was his entry into sobriety, a new working life in the presence of his Higher Power . . . and could still serve anyone else a drink.
Herman was known for his many talents and interests. He was a wonderful photographer. He also was gifted with the ability to draw as well as paint.
Herman absolutely loved playing and coaching hockey. He also enjoyed discussing the latest game with all the players who came to him to have their skates sharpened.
But most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Herman leaves behind his loving wife, Trudy; sons, Gerard (Jacklynne) and Dennis (Cindy) Guimond; and three daughters, Linda (Ken) Guimond, Charmaine (Glen) Guimond, and Cherie (Kim) Mallette.
He also is lovingly admired by his 12 grandchildren, Tracy Cain, Shane Guimond, Janet Holden, Shawnee Guimond-Larocque, Bobbi Guimond-Morris, Clayton Cain, Tosha Mallette Sanders, Amanda Guimond, Dallas Guimond, Whitney (Giiziswedamok) Guimond, Candice Guimond, and Dakota Guimond.
Herman was blessed with 17 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Lizzy, MacKenzie, and Madalyn Cain, Shayanne, Shelby, and Ty Holden, Gabriel and Peyton Larocque, Emma and Noah Morris, Garret Cain, Jonah and Jade Guimond, Braydon and Rhett Christiansen, and Keagan (Ozaawigonebiik) Morrison.
He also is survived by one sister, Mabel Guimond, and one brother, Victor Guimond.
Herman was predeceased by his parents; five brothers, Edward, Lawrence, JoeJoe, Harvey, and Marvin; and three sisters, Joanne, Rose, and Darlene.
Cremation took place in International Falls, Mn.
