HENRY “HANK” VAN DRUNEN

Henry “Hank” Van Drunen, 78, of Devlin, Ont., passed away Friday, May 1, 1998 at the Emo Hospital in Emo, Ont. He was born Jan. 20, 1920 in Cook County, Ill. to the late Anton and Anne Van Drunen.
In 1924, he moved with his family to Emo. During World War II, Hank served overseas with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders from October, 1941 until his discharge in October, 1 942. During his service, he lost his leg in August, 1942 at the battle of Dieppe in France.
Following the war, he returned home and on Feb. 9, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lillian Lloyd. Together they raised their family and farmed in Burriss, Ont. for many years. During the winters, Hank cut pulpwood and also did carpentry work.
He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 99 in Emo, and a life member of the War Amps of Canada. Hank also was a member of Guthrie United Church, and had served in past years for two terms for the school board in Burriss and the school board in La Vallee.
His greatest love was gardening and his grandchildren, which he really enjoyed in his later years.
He was predeceased by his infant son, Lloyd; one brother, Anton “Demps”; two sisters, Annette and Florence; brother-in-law, Bob Lloyd, and by his mother and father-in-law, Hilma and John Lloyd.
Hank is survived by his wife, Lillian Van Drunen of Devlin, Ont.; children, Tim Van Drunen, Fred Van Drunen, Teresa and husband, Al Baker, Elizabeth Van Drunen, and Margaret and husband, Terry Martin; daughter-in-law, Daria Van Drunen; grandchildren, Amy, Katy, and Tim Jr. Van Drunen, Trevor, Jeff, Henry, and Nicole Baker, and Kiel, Scott, Jeremy, and Amber Martin; two sisters, Ruby and husband, Reg Gallagher, and Margaret and husband, Gordon Woollard; sisters-in-law, Marion and husband, Walter Lepinsky, Audrey Lloyd, and Sharon Lloyd; and brothers-in-law, Alfred Lloyd and Helen, and Walter Lloyd and wife, Isabelle.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 5, 1998 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont. Rev. Frances Flook officiated, with interment in Burriss Cemetery in Burriss.
Friends visited Monday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Pallbearers were David Lloyd, Gary Niskala, Ken Hyatt, Tom Judson, Tom Morrish, and Ken Mason.
Honourary pallbearers were John James, Chuck Hammond, Gale Donaldson, Henry Niskala, Bud Cain, and Arthur Mattson.
