Helmer “Tuss” Langlie, 89, passed away suddenly on April 24, 2004 in St. Augustine, Florida.
Tuss was born in Plummer, MN on Sept. 28, 1914.
After graduating high school, he played minor-league baseball in North Dakota for a couple of years and then set off with friends on his great adventure into the Canadian wilderness. There, he and Bob Booren built and operated Arrowhead Camps in Nestor Falls for nearly fifty years (taking time out to serve the US Navy during WWII).
During the winters, he and Verna went ‘south’ to Bemidji, MN, where he was an integral figure in starting the hockey program.
Tuss is survived by Verna–his wife of over 63 years; his daughter, Jean; son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Margaret Langlie-Goddu (widow of Tom); grandchildren, Mark, Kendra, Dan, Josi, Tom, Michele, Michael, and Anna; an increasing number of great-grandchildren; brothers Edwin (Ardith) and Gordon Langlie; plus many devoted nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Thomas; sisters, Thelma Bjorkman and Bergliot Langlie; and infant brother, Alfred.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Canada in Nestor Falls, ON.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nestor Falls United Church.
